EFFECTS OF THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION ON THE METABOLIC RESPONSES TO INJURY

I W Fellows and A M J Woolfson

Royal Infirmary Derby
Department of Clinical Chemistry, City Hospital Nottingham

Abstract

The endocrine and metabolic responses to severe injury may be of sufficient magnitude to be harmful rather than beneficial to the chances of survival. From our present understanding of the nature of these responses, it is possible by physical, hormonal or pharmacological means to manipulate them in theoretically helpful ways. This article reviews the methods whereby such alternations may be produced, and discusses whether their applications has proved to be effective.
