P Wildy

Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge

Abstract

This article provides a background about herpesviruses. It describes the common attributes of the group and draws attention to the diversity between its members. Pathogenesis is discussed especially with respect to two extremely different members, herpes simplex and Epstein-Barr Virus. Further, the important feature of the group—the ability to cause persistent or latent infections and to reactivate and shed virus—is discussed, especially with respect to these two viruses.
