GENITAL INFECTIONS

Michael W Adler and Adrian Mindel

Academic Department of Genitourinary Medicine Middlesex Hospital Medical School London

Abstract

Genital warts, genital herpes and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are three viral sexually acquired diseases which have aroused considerable recent interest and for which there are no currently available curative therapies. Caustic agents or local ablation still remains the treatment of choice for genital warts. Acyclovir is a useful new antiviral agent for the treatment of the first attack of genital herpes and in preventing recurrences. Unfortunately, it does not cure patients and recurrences occur once therapy is stopped. No agent is yet available against human T cell lymphotropic virus type III but the possibility that agents such as suramin and ribavirin might be of use is being explored.
