THE GENETICS OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

D W K Kay

Prudhoe Hospital Prudhoe, Northumberland

Abstract

Genetic studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been concerned with: (i) the relationship between the senile and presenile forms of the disease; (ii) clinical and biological differences between familial and sporadic cases; (iii) cytogenetic changes (aneuploidy and chromosomal aberrations) occurring in AD, other types of dementia and normal ageing, (iv) the genetic relationship between AD and other conditions with Alzheimar-type pathology, notably Down's syndrome, and (v) a search for genetic markers. The results in each area of enquiry have been inconsistent and a number of interesting observations and potentially fruitful hypotheses await confirmation.
