Progress in understanding HLA and disease associations
Department of Immunology, Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital, London

Abstract
Since the previous review of the HLA system by the British Medical Bulletin in 1978 there have been remarkable advances in immunology and molecular biology. This has led to a more complete knowledge of the structure and function of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), and provides us with a background on which to base our understanding of the associations between HLA and disease. The aim of this review is to concentrate on the possible mechanisms involved; we do not attempt to catalogue the known associations, which has been done by others.14
