Inflammation—histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine

D A A Owen

Department of Pharmacology, Smith Kline & French Research Limited Hertfordshire

Abstract

This chapter has considered the role of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in acute inflammation. 5-hydroxytryptamine has an important role in rodents but can be excluded from a major role in non rodent species. In contrast, histamine is clearly important in acute inflammation associated with mast cell degranulation in non rodent species including man. This role of histamine has led to important clinical use of histamine antagonists to suppress inflammatory responses such as allergic rhinitis, various urticarias and asthma. There is little evidence to support an important role for either amine in chronic inflammation.
