Hearing disorders in children
The Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, London
Abstract
Hearing problems in children are important because of their potential effect on developing language and communication skills. These can in turn affect the psychosocial and educational progress of the child, so early identification of hearing-impaired children is essential. New screening methods are being introduced and various methods of providing amplification have been developed. Now that it is feasible to identify at least some children in the first weeks of life, the approach to parent counselling needs to be thought out anew. When the children are investigated at such a young age, the possibility of providing an accurate aetiological diagnosis increases and this is also of importance to the families involved.
