Structure of mycobacterial antigens

D B Young

MRC Tuberculosis and Related Infections Unit, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital London

Abstract

Recent progress in the development of techniques for analysis of mycobacterial antigens has resulted in the identification and detailed structural characterisation of a variety of protein antigens from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae in addition to previously described carbohydrate and glycolipid components. Genes coding for many of the protein antigens have been identified and cloned. Antigenic determinants recognised by antibodies and by T lymphocytes have been mapped and reproduced using synthetic peptide and carbohydrate chemistry. The role of structural studies in an overall approach to analysis of the immune response to mycobacteria is discussed.
