Antigen specificity and function of human T lymphocyte clones reactive with mycobacteria

Jonathan R Lamb and Ann D M Rees

MRC Tuberculosis and Related Infections Unit, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital London

Abstract

The design of vaccines to induce protective immunity to mycobacteria requires knowledge of both the antigens recognised by T cells and the functional subsets activated. In this article we review the different approaches that have been adopted for the analysis of T cell recognition of mycobacterial antigens. Furthermore, T cell effector functions and their potential role in anti-mycobacterial immunity is discussed.
