The pathophysiology of hearing
Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Aston Birmingham
Abstract
In this chapter the functional changes resulting from cochlea pathology are discussed. Whereas it has been recognised for a long time that damage to the sensory cells in the cochlea results in hearing loss (threshold elevation), there is growing evidence, both from studies in animals and humans, that frequency resolution is also impaired. This has important implications for speech perception. Tinnitus and recruitment are frequent sequelae of sensorineural hearing loss and recent data from animal studies have helped to formulate hypotheses about the pathophysiology of these phenomena.
